During Christmas, discover Jodrell Bank as you’ve never seen it before. Enjoy new Science Show ‘Starlight Spectacular’ and special screenings of the beloved classic The Snowman in our Space Dome. Children can reach for the stars at our astronaut dress-up and creative Christmas crafts, adding an extra touch of fun for all ages.
Wander along beautifully decorated paths beneath a canopy of starlight, where thousands of sparkling fairy lights guide you towards the iconic Telescope. 📡 Overview
Winter of Wonder is an evening full of science with a bit of festive cheer. Wandering around Jodrell Bank you can still do and see all the usual rooms and displays and with the science show too it feels like a usual fun and interesting day visit to the Space Centre. However, its that little more festive. With beautiful festive lights and the fact we sat down and enjoyed the film "The Snowman" inside the dome made it stand out from previous visits. We only live 10 minutes away so have a love for Jodrell Bank and the iconic telescope . Sadly the giant dish wasn't lit up due to the policy to protect the dark skies. If you are after a new and interesting Christmas time evening out which is suitable for the whole family then Jodrell Bank is definitely different from all the rest!
🔴 The Festive Lights
The Festive Lights were actually very good. New displays I've not seen anywhere else ( and ive been to 5 this year) and the use of coloured lights against the trees and lining the paths was lovely. There aren't loads of lights but what's there is beautiful. I actually think Jodrell Bank could really build on this event as it grows year on year. So I'm hoping that next year this gets even bigger. The paths around Jodrell are tarmac so great for wheelchairs and pushchairs with no risk of getting muddy.
⚪ The Snowman
Inside the Space Dome you can enjoy watching the film of the Snowman. Even though this is in the planetarium the screen is a usual rectangle and does not fill the whole space which i did hope it would. It is still very enjoyable as with the seating inside the dome you are guaranteed a good view. There are other festive films being shown at Jodrell on other dates too if you fancy doing this over the Christmas season.
🎥 Winter Films
With 15 screenings lined up, including Elf, Home Alone, Love Actually, Die Hard and It’s a Wonderful Life.
The Snowman and the Science Show are on through out the evening starting at intervals. So we had time to watch the snowman, then have time dressing up, getting a hot drink and then watching the science show. I would recommend getting there earlier than later as we were there a good 2.5 hours and didn't eat in that time so if you go for dinner too i would allow at least 3.5 hours.
🟣 "Starlight Spectacular" Science Show
This is a 25min show, all about stars. This is a brand new show for Jodrell. With 6 different little experients to support what was being talked about by the scientists including burning different substances, setting fire to a balloon and finding out what would happen if you fell into a black hole! Make sure you arrive in good time to get a good seat as sometimes your view can be a little blocked.
🔵 Children's Craft
There were 3 activities laid out on the tables with everything you would need to create a shooting star, a rocket or an alien spacecraft. These were simple crafts which were perfect for younger children. My daughter really enjoyed this part of the evening.
🟠 Dress up as an Astronaut
These costumes were fab. They looked so realistic and the children looks great dressing up as an astronaut. They could walk on the moon and get some fun photos.
🥪 Food & Drink
Both onsite cafes are open during Winter of Wonder. The cafe at Planet Pavilion is serving take out drinks. While the main cafe inside First Light Pavilion is serving a full menu of hot and cold food, drinks and cakes with plenty of inside seating.
