The Lovell Quinta Arboretum in Swettenham, near Congleton is a 28 acre site of beautiful gardens and woodland. It was created by Sir Bernard Lovell in the mid 1950s, best known for his telescope at Jodrell Bank and his work with radar. He was very enthusiastic about plants, especially trees and shrubs, and collected examples from far and wide. The Arboretum is home to a colourful range of around 2,500 different plants including snowdrops, crocus and daffodils in the spring as well as trees and shrubs. A tranquil place of grassy walks and leafy arbours, the Arboretum is home to a wide variety of wildlife and makes the perfect destination for a family outing or a quiet walk.

The arboretum has a large collection of trees and shrubs some of which are very rare. There are more than 60 oak trees, glades, and avenues of birches, balsam poplars, red-twigged limes and the Great Avenue of trees. The radio telescope at Jodrell Bank is visible from the north west corner of the arboretum near the end of the native tree avenue and their are views over the valley of the River Dane.
It is a wonderful space that's open daily to the public, except Christmas Day from 9am to sunset. Groups are welcome and guided tours available by prior arrangement. Entry is by the outside eating area of the Swettenham Arms and parking is available in Swettenham Arms Car park.
🥾The arboretum has three self-guided trails – blue, red and yellow – indicated by coloured posts and a descriptive leaflet available by the noticeboard near the entrance.
🌼During Spring the arboretum is filled with snowdrops in February & Daffodils in March. This is a lovely time of year to visit and normally when it is at its busiest.
The refurbished lake was originally created in the 1960s and is now restored thanks to a grant from the Veolia Environmental Trust.
