The Blackpool Tower Circus
The Blackpool Tower Circus

Our first ever visit to The Blackpool Tower Circus. This full of history and iconic tower sits on Blackpool sea front. It first opened on !4th May 1894, making it the oldest permanent Circus Arena in the world. The hippodrome style stage ring is one of the only two working today in the UK. The arena is stunning, it had a feeling of luxury with Italian marble covering the walls and floors and a vaulted ceiling with lavish patterns. You could sense how special it was and it was a lovely family experience to have.

We were very lucky to be invited to watch the amazing show by Merlin so we could write what we thought about it. I was given special permissions to take photos and videos of the show which is normally prohibited.

The Blackpool Tower Circus Clowns Monky and Boo
Monky and Boo

Our verdict of The Blackpool Tower

The acts were a real mix between having us either laughing out loud or being in total amazement that the act was even possible. It was an entertaining 2 hours with flying acrobatics, astonishing skills and comedy which our whole family enjoyed.

We all had different favourites which shows why it is great that they have such varied acts.

My youngest daughter loved the clown and was giggling like mad at the trumping jokes and the silliness.

My eldest liked the acrobatic brothers, it was amazing to watching the younger brother being flung about by the feet of the older brother.

We were amazed at the juggling act, I mean its not every day you watch someone juggling balls with their mouth!

Getting our Seats

We had pre-booked our tickets but seats were first come first served so we made sure we arrived 30minutes before the show was due to start. Gaining entry to the attraction was very straightforward and we were quickly sat in our seats with time to go to the toilet and get some snacks from the refreshments stall. There are also some light up toys and circus toys available to buy. The Blackpool Tower Circus is similar inside to a big top with seats surrounding the stage and all offering a great view of the show.

Mooky and Boo

One of the first acts on the stage were Mooky and Mr Boo, the circus clowns. They bounced off each other well with little quips and jokes, some slightly rude and others simple trump jokes.

Trapeze Artist

Trapeze

The show features two trapeze acts, the first was a lady who swung high above our heads, flipping and switching position whilst flying through the hair on the swing.

The second trapeze artist was Alexander Lichner, who impressively hung upside down using his ankles, this was definitely one of those wow moments and I wondering how he even learnt how to do it.

Contortionist

Contortionist and Juggler

The bendy contortionist was fabulous to watch. She twisted herself into interesting and wierd positions with minimal effort. The juggler who was my favourite first juggled with 5 footballs which was a true talent as they were bigger than his hands. Then to top that, he juggled balls using his mouth while still juggling the footballs. Quite outstanding.

Acrobatic Brothers

Acrobatic Brothers

These two were outstanding and my eldest daughters' favourite. It was amazing watching them work together. Putting absolute trust in each other. The eldest brother tumbled his younger brother with just his feet. An impressive site and the skill needed to accomplish this are unthinkable.

Impressive Juggling Act

Audience Participation

There were two acts where Mooky the clown grabbed unexpecting audience members and took them down onto the arena floor. I'd seen one of these done previously at another circus so knew what was coming but still I found it amusing and well led by Mooky. There was an act where Mooky produced a silent film again with the audience playing the parts. I did think it went on for quite a long time and even though it is in keeping with circus tradition I would have liked to have seen another amazing edge of the seat type act instead. Saying that, my youngest found this really funny and was her favourite bit.

Roller Skating Finale

Roller Skating Water Finale

The Blackpool Tower Circus performance concluded with a spectacular water finale using their famous hippodrome. The floor turned into a pool of water with two skaters on a small circular stage in the middle. They span around together showing their great strength and skill.

As well as the astonishing, edge-of-your-seat acts, the circus features a live band and gorgeous dancers who really add to the whole experience of the show.

With a new show produced every year showcasing hand-picked acts from around the world, it is no wonder people keep returning to this spectacular circus!

Some history about The Blackpool Tower

The hippodrome style stage ring is one of the only two surviving working examples of this feature today in the UK, the other being the Great Yarmouth Hippodrome. The arena takes less than a minute to fill with 42,000 gallons of water, weighing 190 metric tons and is often used in the finale
