We visited the brand new museum in the heart of Manchester, and it’s guaranteed to make you feel trippy
We have a 10 and slightly fussy 13 year old, and they both really enjoyed the museum. Even the husband joined in on the fun, getting in the exhibits and posing for photos. It was definitely a great activity for all of us. We loved being surprised by the illusions. We spent the whole time laughing at the craziness or opened mouthed wondering how things looked like that. It was a completely new concept for us, and we saw so many new things we had never seen before.
I feel like your first visit would be the best as once you have seen them, they won't have that same WOW factor.
My top tip is to take your time exploring. Make sure you look at each exhibit and read about it from the information & watch the video. That way, you can understand a bit more about it and also see how to get the best photos. There are also stickers on the floor showing where its best to stand. Use them!
The Museum of Illusions is packed full of mind-bending, reality-twisting installations and exhibits, whether you fancy dangling off the side of a building or wobbling your way through the Vortex Tunnel. It even has some Manchester themed exhibits including an interactive Metrolink tram and Alan Turing featured in the Following Eyes Illusion.
You can explore over 65 exhibits, including the Ames Room where you go from tiny to a giant in a couple of steps or the Cloning Table where my daughter loved playing pat a cake with her self but it looked like a table full of people.
The museum makes you feel like your going to fall over, makes you see hundreds of copies of yourself and even merges your face with your friends.
Photo-Worthy Moments:
Charge your phones before going as it's full of great photo opportunities. We were taking so many photos and videos. The best one had to be where it looked like we were all hanging off the side of a building. It was so clever & had us giggling when coming up with ideas as we waited our turn. There was even a member of staff there to take our photo so all four could be in the photo.
Perfect for All.
The museum is such a fun concept with playful mirrors and hands on puzzles making it suitable for any age. Toddlers to grandparents can enjoy exploring the optical illusions. Plus, its accessible by all as pushchairs and wheelchairs can make their way around the museum. There was just one set of steps to get into the vortex tunnel but the rest of the exhibits would be no problem. Just watch the slanted room!

Hands on Illusions and Puzzles
Inside the Brain Gym there are lots of little and big games and challenges. Take a seat at the table and try to build a
hexiamond puzzle or pyramid with balls. There are particular great for children as they get to have a go and are secretly learning and using their brain while on a fun day out.
Optical Illusions
We find optical illusions fascinating because they remind us of the discrepancy between perception and reality. They play tricks on your brain and can make you see things that aren't really there. Plus they are inclusive, everyone can see and feel the effects they have on us.
