What a find!
After venturing into Manchester on the train to visit one of Manchester's brand new Museums and a few shops we headed back to near the station to visit Freight Island and found this amazing park just next door in Mayfield Park.
It looked almost space age with the tall metal towers with spiraling slides and bridges that glinted in the sunlight.
Built in 2022 it's was the city's first park in 100 years and it has even won a Green Flag Award. It was developed from derelict land and now a safe and fun place to visit for children and their families.
The park is landscaped to beautifully incorporate the River Medlock, which meanders through the park and creates a really welcome water feature. There is a lawn space which is used for events, a quiet contemplation zone, a wildscape for biodiversity, and multiple routes of walkways.
The best slide has to be the one that goes right over the river. If you are brave enough to travel over the slatted bridge to the top of the slide you have definitely earned the awesome slide that's waiting for you.
What else is in the park
Sunken trampolines, balance beams, small slides, big slides, swings and a roundabout. These are all is really good condition and was a great selection to keep the kids busy playing for a good while.
There is seating for parents and you can even get something to eat or drink from the Cosmic Vine Cafe. You can also bring a picnic to enjoy in the park.
Food & Drink
Cosmic Vine Cafe- this wooden hut sells hot and cold drinks, little cakes and crisps. Next to the cafe was an ice cream van too. There was also a hit food stall setting up on our visit however i don't think he's always there. However if you are after a proper lunch or meal then i would totally recommend calling into Freight Island which is next door. This is a great venue with street food stalls, loads of seating and events on throughout the year.
Facilities
With clean toilets including an accessible toilet, baby changing facilities and a water station means its easy to spend a couple of hours here if playing with friends and a mum friend to chat with.
Plus, its really safe with a security team which are there to assist you if in need any help and cctv puts your mind at ease. It is also a smoke free park.
