Lymm Railway Walk
Lymm Railway Walk

Lymm Railway is perfect if you want a little stroll out with a stop at a cafe for lunch or an icecream.

It's a safe, off road family-friendly walk in Altrincham. It is part of the Transpennine Trail

Parking

We parked just off Seamon's Road in the Transpennine Trail car park WA14 5RF. It's only small, but we managed to get a space. You can get straight onto the trail from this carpark.

Top Tips

• Car park - Seamon's Rd, Broadheath, Altrincham WA14 5RF

• Nice flat, wide path with no cars

• You can come off the trail at multiple locations to get something to eat. Here are a few options

• at Dunham Barn for lunch or cake

• at Dunham Massey Ice Cream Farm

• at the Rope & Anchor Pub for a meal or a play in the playarea

• Dunham Apple Barn - Apple Orchard and cafe

• Perfect for Pushchairs, wheelchairs, scooters and bikes.

The trail is along an old railway line, which stopped being used in 1985, and the tracks have been removed. These sorts of paths are always the same. Lovely, long, well surfaced wide paths with no risks of cars and perfect for pushchairs, bikes, and scooters.

The Dunham Barn

Along this trail, there are a number of great places to come off at to find a spot of lunch or an ice cream. The first place to come off after about 1.5km is at the bridge where you can join school lane. Along this lane is The Dunham Barn. A lovely cafe, with plenty of seating, serving lunches, drinks and cakes.

Left to Ice Cream Farm and Rope & Anchor

Further along the trail at 3km, you can come off at Station Road at this gate. As you come off the trail, to the left you will soon find The Rope & Anchor Pub and to your right is a sign for Dunham Apple Barn which is a shop and cafe just further along the road.

Go left and walk about 5-10mins and you will come to The Dunham Massey Ice Cream Farm

The Rope & Anchor Pub which has a lovely beer garden and play area. Or a bit further along Station road you can get to Dunham Massey Ice Cream farm.

Dunham Massey Ice Cream Farm

Dunham Massey Ice Cream Farm is a lovely Ice Cream Parlour and cafe with both indoor and outdoor seating. The serve pizza and toasties as well as a large choice of drinks and of course ice creams.

The incentive of walking to get an ice cream always helps little legs i find so this is a great family walk.

The path is really good for bikes and scooters. Wide, straight, and flat with no risk of cars. When you come off the path to get to one of the places i have listed for a bite to eat, these are now along roads (some with narrow or a short time without pavements) so be careful on these parts with small children.

Along the Bridgewater Canal

As it's a there and back type of walk, you can go as far as you like and simply turn round. The full distance of this section of The Transpennine Trail would take you all the way to Lymm & is roughly 6 miles one way. For confident riders, this would be a great distance with treats along the way.

As an alternative route, if you visited The Dunham Barn, just before you get back onto the Transpennine Trail on the way back, you come to a bridge over the canal. Cross the bridge and get down onto the canal path and go left. This runs parallel to the Transpennine Trail and will bring you back to Seamons Road which the car park is off. Basically walk from the bridge you went down on to the canal to the next bridge you come to and go up to the road.
