Grosvenor Park Chester Children's Playground
Grosvenor Park Chester

The award-winning Grosvenor Park is located in the centre of the city of Chester, overlooking the River Dee. I always feel like I'm on holiday when visiting the city, walking along the river and exploring the park and gardens is a delightful way to spend your day. It has a lovely children's play area, a miniature railway and plenty of grassy lawns and beautiful flower beds. During the summer it plays host to the Storyhouse Open Air Theatre which is a must do activity for any theatre lover.

The park underwent a considerable renovation project in 2014 and the 5.8 hectares of landscaped parkland is now a jewel in Chester's cultural crown

The park is situated just outside the city walls and overlooks the River Dee making is a great place to visit. We often park up and walk along the river to Grosvenor Park. The girls have a play and then we find some nearby steps up on to the historic walls. Dropping down into the centre for some shopping or to get lunch. Finally, we head back along the river to get an ice cream while we watch the boats.

Miniature Train Ride

There is the cutest train ride around the park. It is open during weekends, public holidays and school holidays Feb to Nov and weekends Dec to Jan. Summer: 10.30am to 5pm. Winter: 11.00am to 4pm.

It is only a couple of pounds to go on the train, making it a nice little extra activity.

Children's Play Area

The play area is in a fully accessible area providing play and exploration for everyone. It was designed by local artist, Andrew Small using a range of natural materials.

There is a metal climbing structure with a tree at its centre. My girls love to climb and hang off this in an endless amount of ways. There is a mix of the usual slides and swings but also some unusual equipment you may not have seen before.

Medieval Arches

Within the park there are three medieval arches that were moved from another location in Chester.

• St Mary's Arch dates back to around the thirteenth century and formerly stood in St Mary's Benedictine Nunnery.

• The Old Shipgate Arch formerly stood to the west of the Bridgegate and was moved in 1831.

• The third archway was removed from St Michael's Church.

The Gardens

The gardens of the park are beautiful, especially in summer. The wide open grass has a number of flat, wide paths running through making it fully accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There are colourful flower beds and there are always some cleverly made wicker structures in the flower beds which celebrate an event. There was a wicker head of the Queen made for her Jubilee.

Open Air Theatre

Every summer the team behind Storyhouse bring their performances to the park with Grosvenor Park Open Theatre. The sounds of popping corks, picnics unpacked and happy audiences are now the defining sounds of Chester's summer. And a great way to experience the park. Last year i took my girls to watch A Midsummers Night Dream and it was definitely one of our summer highlights.

Cafes in Grosvenor Park

There used to be The Lodge cafe in the park but this closed in December 2023. For food and drinks you can easily leave the park to head either into the shopping centre to find a cafe or restaurant or if you head down to the river there are a few really nice cafes and ice cream parlours.
