Eureka! Science + Discovery
Eureka! Science + Discovery

Eureka! Science + Discovery is a hand on, interactive museum full of information about the human body, nature, materials, animals and the world.

Discover how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics are a part of everyday life.

Eureka! Science + Discovery is housed in the Seacombe Ferry Terminal building. It has been created with and for children and young people aged 0-14. Similar to the Halifax site, it has Eureka!'s unique blend of creative, hands-on learning combined with cutting edge 21st century technology that has resulted in an engaging and fun-filled family day out and discovery experience!

When you purchase your ticket in full (not using Tesco clubcard vouchers) your ticket becomes an annual pass. It has resulted in us visiting Eureka plenty of times over the last 12 months as 1. my daughters love all the interactive parts of the museum. 2. It becomes a free day out which we can book last minute, especially if it is a rainy day and we want to hide inside learning and playing. Eureka has plenty to do and see so you could easily spend 3 hours plus here. During the School holidays there is usually a whole time tables of extra shows, events and activities to make it even more interesting.

All about Climate

During each school holiday Eureka put on so many new and interesting activities and shows to make the place worth visiting again and again. Even when it is term time Eureka is full of all their usual hands on exhibits. There are three sections and they are all perfect for little hands and little minds. Colourful, easy to read and understand and made fun with how interactive it is. There are plenty of flaps to lift, buttons to press and handles to turn.

In each section of the museum there is so much information displayed all over the walls which is partnered with a physical display which helps explain how things work to the younger generation.

When you arrive.

You book an entry time, however you can stay for as long as you want once in. I would suggest getting there slightly before your entry time as there is normally a queue to get in. The staff like to explain about the museum to each visitor so I think this is why there is a queue to get in, but make sure you have your booking ready to help with this. You get a stamp for your hand so you can come and go during the day. The cafe and "The Burrow" which is the under 7s area is in a separate building just across the road.

Bodies

Learn how your body is unique, one of a kind – test it, embellish it, look after it.

You will discover everything about the "Human Body" including all about your sight and hearing, how your body works during exercise, breathing, the whole digestive system including flushing a poo down the loo which my girls find hilarious, find out about your brain, how feelings work and just everything about a growing body which any child would find relatable. It is perfect for getting conversations started about your child's ever changing body.

Homes

Design your own toothpaste tube

"Fabric and Space of our homes". This covers materials that your houses are made of and why they are used, all about clothing and fabrics.

My girls favourite section was when they got to design their own toothpaste. on a computer screen you could design the packaging including the colours, images and name. We learned why toothpaste is the colour it is to represent being fresh and clean.

This section makes you think differently about the everyday! What is it for, why is it made like that, how does it work, would I do it differently? What makes a home, and what makes your home yours?

Nature

Finally, learn all about "Nature". With more interactive screens with information about birds, how tides happen, about weather and climate change, and endless information about our planet.

What does our environment teach us about ourselves, our purpose, and our connections to each other? Can nature inspire new ways of living and provide solutions to the big challenges we all face?

You probably wont see everything on your first visit as there is just so much to look at and read.

Amazing Inventions

In this Nature part there is also a sort of play area. A big wooden tree house structure goes up into the ceiling and the kids can run and climbs and let off some steam after all that learning. It is only small so can get busy but it great for little ones.

Make Create Space

Make Create

A space dedicated to helping you get your MAKE on. Design, tinker, make and create:

During the holidays this is where extra events are held. It is a calm and creative space where there is normally a craft project and somewhere to chill and relax away from the busy museum.

School Holiday Activities - January

As it was a school holiday they had some extra activities on. The one we did was the Magical Story Jars. The company were in the theatre room to lead the activity.

From some jars the girls selected some characters, a setting and scenario. Then they took them to a table a wrote a short story using the cards. There was also a treasure chest on the table filled with objects to spark even more ideas. The staff were really helpful and encouraging and made it a great bonus thing to do while at Eureka. Ray Bubbles Show

School Holiday Events - Summer

During the summer holidays you will find a "Hidden Garden" themed list of events.

There are some craft activities such as collarge and colouring, some garden games such as a big connect four, crochet and a ball game. Then settle down on the grass and have a read of some books. Plus a giant deck chair for those memorable photos.

Have a look at a stunning flower art installations by the talented local eco-artist Alison Bailey Smith. These giant sculptures celebrate nine beautiful plants native to the Wirral—eight gorgeous flowers that rely on insects for pollination and one unique grass that lets the wind do the work.

My daughter was really excited to watch the show of Ray Bubbles, as who doesn't like bubbles! Ray bubbles has a few dates when he is on over the summer holidays.

This was a 45-minute show and was so fun and entertaining. Ray did so many new and different things with bubbles that i didn't even know was possible. He got a few kids up onto the stage to help him, which, of course, they all loved. My daughter was chosen who got to play keepy uppy with a balloon ball and a balloon bat. It's so impressive. We got on the front row as queued up early to get a good seat, which is definitely my top tip. You could see better but also you could pop the balloons when fell in front of you which the kids loved.

Ray, the International Bubbleologist and Guinness World Record Holder put on a fantastic and well worth catching show.
