It was a little hard to find. Head down Brown Street, once you are at the Post Office you will see DNA VR opposite. There isn't an obvious sign from outside but when you look inside you will see the neon signage.

We just spend an hour in a virtual playground with crazy technology which is hard to believe is even possible. We were invited to come and try DNA VR Manchester, who have taken immersive gaming to the next level.

Getting Set Up

We entered our room which had four bays. Each with a virtual headset and hand sets. In the centre was the VR master who helped us set up the games and is on hand to lead us through our hour playing. Once we were all stood in our bays and fitted with our headsets it was time to start playing.

Communication

We could all communicate with each other through the headsets and this was also how the VR master guided us through our experience. Even though the VR Master could talk to us, as there were five off us on the communication line, sometimes it was quite hard to hear instructions, maybe because of my over excited children. And when your session is counting down every second you definitely don't want to waste any time.

Games We Played

In our hour we played 3 different games. You could choose between loads of games, some are single player but we went for the multiplayer games. You can choose from different categories and for different age ranges. We played Plush Rush, Fear of the Dark and Cook Out.

First off we went for a children's shooting game "Plush Rush". We were in a bedroom where the toys had come to live ( a little like Toy Story) and we had to protect our sweets from the toys. This was colourful and very child friendly. We were shooting at toy soldiers, tanks and spaceships. It took me and my littlest girl who is nine a while to work out how to select our gun. But once we got into the game it was a good one to start with as simple to understand and easy to play.

Next we went for an adult horror game "Fear of the Dark". We played this only for a couple of rounds as our 9 year old wasn't quite sure about it which was understandable. We were following a mystery person who held a torch and we had to protect him from creatures and not all were from this world.

Cook out Virtual Reality Game

The final game was our favourite and really displayed how clever the virtual reality was. In "Cook Out" we all worked in a restaurant and people came up to place their orders. We had to work as a team to make up sandwiches. It was quite a challenging game as really testing your teamwork, we were speaking to each other constantly as we only had a few ingredients each. It was only after a couple of rounds we realised we could pass each other ingredients to chop. This is really what impressed me. It seemed impossible to be able to do this within a game but we were passing tomatoes and the sauce between us and the kids were loving squirting the ketchup over each other. I would really recommend this game for people going with children as we found it so entertaining and funny.

Our Final Verdict

The games say they are for 7 years plus and i can understand why. My 9 year old struggled a little when she has to squeeze the hand controller to pick up items just because her hand is so small and the games took a little more explaining to her, especially as it was a new experience for her.

As a family it was a great activity. We were completely engrossed in the games, but not as a single person, we were engrossed together. Talking, laughing and helping each other.

I would love to do this activity regularly. The price would stop me sadly as it is definitely a special occasion activity as it is very dear for just an hour. Our 1 hour VR Arcade session costs £124 as we did it at 1.30pm on a weekday so Super Off Peak.
