Chester City Walls Walk
The historic city of Chester is home to the longest and most complete city walls in Britain. Originally built for protection, they are now one of the city's major visitor attractions.
On a drizzly day in January we were after an interesting walk but one that would have a solid path to avoid any mud.
Chester walls came to mind. Chester is one of our favourite cities to walk around but we had not yet competed the full walk of the walls.

We parked at Watergate Street Car Park CH1 4JH. This is a good carpark for general shopping but very good for accessing the walls too.
The main access onto the walls is at each of the four main gateways - Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate and Bridgegate. Walk out of the car park and go under the bridge. There you will be able to find steps up on the wall. We travelled along the walls clockwise.
The city walls are the oldest, longest and most complete in Britain, parts of which are almost 2000 years old. Walking the complete circuit (2.9km) gives amazing views down into the city and gives a fantastic insight into Chester's long history.
On route you'll have chance to see Chester's many attractions including the castle, cathedral and racecourse.
Chester Cathedral is many things to many people; a vibrant community of worship, an ancient abbey, an archaeological treasure, a cultural hub, a centre of musical excellence and a unique blend of medieval and modern history.
There are plenty of boards up along the walls to show you the aerial view and map of the walls and where you are stood. There are also boards up telling you about all the different parts of the wall such as about "King Charles Tower", "Morgan's Mount" and "The Water Tower".
At the Water tower you can actually go down some steps and you will find a great playground and large grassy area. Our girls played on this for a while even though wet. But it would be really good in the summer and even has toilets and a cafe by it. The play area is called " Water Tower Gardens".
You can come down off the walls at multiple points. It is easy to find a cafe or place to eat during or at the end of your walk. We popped down to find a chippy and then carried on our walk with a cone of chips each.
