Break Free offers five escape rooms with captivating scenarios: Sherlock, Island, Jumanji, CSI, and Magic. Each room presents a unique set of puzzles and tasks, catering to different difficulty levels. Located in the centre of Newcastle- upon-lyme it is a great inside activity for a wide range of children and adults.
We embarked on an adventure in the "Magic" room, an incredibly interactive and fun experience that truly challenged our thinking abilities and required sharp hand-eye coordination. As a medium-difficulty room, it struck a perfect balance for our group. We managed most of the puzzles, but without two helpful hints and the ticking 60-minute timer, we might still be inside!
Did we find the Stone of Philosophy and break free?

• Working together
Some of the clues left us completely stumped, proving quite challenging at times. However, I was thoroughly impressed by how quickly the girls, aged between 10 and 13, solved several puzzles—often beating me to it! Despite needing a couple of hints, their performance was brilliant. Watching them work together and talking about their ideas fantastic, and it’s easy to see why people are drawn to the excitement of escape rooms—it left us eager for more.
• We did it!
We were thrilled to escape in 46 minutes and couldn't wait to pose for photos with the "We Bossed It" and "We Won" boards afterward.
• What's inside the room?
The Magic room was cleverly designed, offering a wide range of challenges to keep everyone engaged. In the dimly lit environment, we tackled tasks like solving math problems, finding hidden keys, and uncovering secret doors. The room's interactive elements, such as lights and sounds signaling correct actions, added an extra layer of immersion. The blend of brain-teasing riddles and hands-on tasks, like sorting drawers and performing a secret knock, made the experience both intellectually stimulating and fun.
• Harry?
The theme had us smiling throughout, especially when we donned wizard robes and hats at the start. The goal of finding the Stone of Philosophy gave us a compelling mission, and the subtle nods to a certain beloved wizard made it even more enjoyable for fans
• 5 Room to Choose
Break Free offers five captivating scenarios: Sherlock, Island, Jumanji, CSI, and Magic. Each room presents a unique set of puzzles and tasks, catering to different difficulty levels. We chose the Magic room for its mid-range challenge, which suited our group of children and adults perfectly.
Upon arrival, the friendly staff walked us through the process and explained that if we got stuck, we could press a switch for a hint. To make the leaderboard you had to escape in under 33 minutes with fewer than two hints. What a thrilling extra challenge!
• Everyone can play
There’s no age restriction, and it was a pleasant surprise to learn that children aged 7 and under can play for free with two paying players. A carer also goes free under the same conditions. It’s best to book ahead online, as slots fill up quickly, though you can also check same-day availability by phone.
