Bidlea Dairy started off selling their homemade ice creams back in 2020 and it's grown as a business massively over the last couple of years.
The family-run Bidlea Dairy is in Twemlow, near Holmes Chapel. They have built a large wooden building which has both indoor and outdoor seating including a viewing platform where you can enjoy your ice cream cones while looking out across rolling fields and on to the famous Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Ice Creams
🍨They serve about 20 different flavours of ice creams, including a couple of sorbets. The ice cream is produced on site using milk from their very own herd. Get your scoops in a tub or cone. No toppings are needed on these flavours, just one of Bidlea's personalised, instagramable, wafers. There are always new and interesting flavours being made and there is normally a special seasonal one to try.
Bidlea Milk
🥛It's not just ice creams it's famous for. They have been dairy farmers for 3 generations and the milk from their 1000 strong herd of Holstein-Fresian cows has a good reputation and has lead to them winning both national and European awards. They do door step milk deliveries as well as having a milk vending machine on the farm. They also make and sell a variety of single cream, whipping cream, double cream and salted butter. They have BURTS cheese made here on the premises by Claire Burt and cheese from Reaseheath College.
Cafe
☕The cafe also serves coffees, hot chocolate and flavoured teas. Hot homemade soup, Homemade pies and pastries are available aswel as toasties and breakfast sandwiches. They have a counter filled with the most amazing cakes. There are beautifully homemade by Jill and Gwen and some cakes are from Buzzy B and Baked by Bean! We visited over Easter and enjoyed cream egg and mini egg brownies. The Easter theme was also in some of the ice cream flavours including a cream egg and malteaser bunny flavour.
Other attractions on the farm
The farm is starting to be a hub for businesses with "Zoo2U" and "Burts Cheese" located on the premises. They have held art exhibits and their function room is perfect for kids parties or meetings.
The farm also puts on extra events during the holidays including animal handling at Easter, a pumpkin patch in October, meeting Santa at Christmas so keep an eye on their Facebook page to get updates.
👣 Walk to Bidlea
We like to do a walk from Holmes Chapel to Bidlea. It takes us about 45minutes to walk and is perfect for most times of the year as its a good path along a loose stone path and the road. Walk to Bidlea, enjoy an ice cream or cake and then walk back. Perfect.
👣 The Route
Start on Hermitage Drive, at the far end of the road there is a large gate with a path that leads you down a loose stoned path to the River Dane. You will find Hermitage Bridge which dates back to 1707 with a beautiful view of our famous Viaduct. Walk over the cobbled bridge and along the path, which has a slight incline, till you get to the end. With Hollins Farm on your left, follow the road round to the right. The road then bend round to the left as you pass Hermitage Farm on your right.
Safer route
At the end of this path there are two large stone pillars and you meet the main road. Turn right, cross the road and turn first left down a lane. Follow this to the metal kissing gates where you turn right and walk across the fields. Going through two more wooden kissing gates you finally see Bidlea in front of you.
Road route
At the stone pillars you can turn right and follow the road to Bidlea, however there is a blind bend along here so it can be dangerous so i would advise you, especially if with children and dogs to walk the safer route option.
You can't miss Bidlea on your walk, it stands out like a beacon with its wooden building and big "Bidlea Dairy" lettering. Its a lovely there and back 6-7km walk through the countryside, with a tasty treat along the way. I love to support the family at Bidlea, coming from a farming family myself, plus its easy when they make such amazing ice creams too.
